I have to admit, despite my emotional experiences, I'm in a better place now compared to my past. I've been through some great moments while feeling otherwise. At this point, I wouldn’t trade this for anything. I have achieved stability, freedom, and opportunities that far exceed anything I've had in the past decade of doing business.
Currently, I have a smaller network. But the value of relationships holds as much weight as what I’ve built over time. Oh, the bridges I burned along the way! It was not easy, and my business suffered because of it. This, in turn, compounded my own issues.
Lesson 1: The Importance of Mentorship

Mentorship might be the most crucial aspect of both business and personal life. This is a lesson I’ve come to deeply appreciate recently. Looking back, I wish I had shared this insight during many missed opportunities.
The real key lies in releasing your value. Understand the impact you have on others and vice versa. The relationships and perspectives built around your career are precious. Each network differs based on shifts in experience and perspective.
Types of Mentorship
A mentorship can manifest in three primary relationships. It's essential to fulfill the first one well:
First-Hand Accountability: This is where you have a genuine mentor who identifies as such. You are being mentored and may also serve as a mentor for others.
Second-Hand Influence: This refers to a supervisor whose impact goes beyond their title. They may not be your mentor in the traditional sense, but they influence your life positively through their guidance.
Third-Party Influence: You may take advice from indirect influences, like your favorite YouTuber or celebrity. While these can be public mentors, they cannot tailor their guidance to your quirks.
Notice that I haven’t mentioned talent yet. That’s because there is one key difference between talent and success:
Lesson 2: Discipline and Consistency

Discipline is the backbone of consistency. It also represents self-respect. Recognizing your value is vital. Many creatives and entrepreneurs face identity crises. Remember, 15 minutes of fame isn’t a career; it’s a fleeting moment of viral success.
Your true value is the body of work you create over time. Take crafting a music album as an example. What’s your lesson plan? What does your music resonate with, and why? Talent without discipline is meaningless.

Lesson 3: The 3 Ps
Plan
Prep
Partner
To succeed, you need clarity on how to execute your goals, what resources you need, and who can help you. Partnerships are significant; they should operate on mutual benefit.
Every artist, entrepreneur, or small business owner should start with a lean business model. Understanding the economics of your brand is critical. Think about it:
Politicians are brands.
A single-owner shop is a brand.
A social media influencer is a brand.
Brands need plans. You’ll refine your plans over time. This will help you recognize who aligns with your goals.
Partnerships matter greatly. Your mentor can become a business advisor or even a board member. Sponsorship can provide essential resources, but ensure it reflects your brand’s values.
Navigating Partnerships
Your preparation and planning will help identify the value of potential partnerships. Would you collaborate with someone who is unclear about their purpose? Maybe, if they are talented. Just know your role in the collaboration. Always ensure that everyone understands the plan, which leads to mutual agreements.
Sure, there are many ways to do things "the right way." However, I want to celebrate my milestones by sharing three lessons where I fell short at critical points. For more detailed insights tailored to business planning, check out my ebook, Diadem of Life.
